New Resident Guide: Your First Month in Switzerland

Published on June 16th, 2026

Congratulations on your move to Switzerland! You have already successfully obtained new resident status. However, there are still a number of important steps to remember.

To help you settle in smoothly, we’ve created a practical checklist. This covers the most important tasks to complete during your first month in Switzerland.

Step 1: Register your Residence

You have to register your residence at your local municipality within 14 days of arriving in Switzerland and before your first day of employment. Some communes allow you to make an appointment in advance while others require you to visit within the opening hours. You will need to bring documents such as your passport, visa, employment contract and rental agreement. This registration initiates processing of your residence permit.

Step 2: Biometrics

During residence registration, you will be assigned a biometrics appointment. You have to visit your canton’s Migration Office and provide fingerprints, biometric photo and signature. Any missing documents should also be submitted at this stage. Your residence permit will then be sent to you by post in the next 2 to 6 weeks.

Step 3: Health Insurance

There are numerous different health insurance providers in Switzerland. It is mandatory that you select one and sign up within 3 months of arriving in Switzerland. Remember that unlike in neighbouring Germany, there is no option to include family members on one person’s insurance; each person requires their own health insurance.

Step 4: Bank Account

You will need a Swiss bank account for salary payments, rent and everyday expenses. Take some time to consider whether a digital online bank with lower fees or a traditional bank with in-person branches will better suit your needs.

Important Tip

Most of these steps will require you to provide important documents such as passport, visa, employment contract and rental agreement. We therefore recommend that you keep physical and digital copies ready during your first weeks in Switzerland.

Further Assistance

We recommend that you complete each of these steps as soon as possible once you arrive in Switzerland to ensure that you settle in smoothly. If you would like support in any of these steps, do not hesitate to get in touch with us at Expats Guide, we will be happy to help!
